How To Avoid A Car Accident In Fog

Fog is essentially a cloud consisting of tiny water droplets suspended in the air near the ground. Driving through fog can be difficult because it distorts a driver’s ability to clearly see and perceive the landscape and any surrounding objects. Any impairment in clear driving vision can create dangers and hazards for the driver and other motorists on the road.

While driving in fog is never ideal, sometimes travel is necessary. If you have to drive in foggy conditions, consider doing the following:

  • Slow down – When the driving conditions change so should your driving behavior. If you can’t clearly see the surrounding landscape, others likely won’t either. Slowing down your speed, even below the speed limit, will allow you to react safely.
  • Turn on windshield wipers – Since fog is composed of tiny water droplets, use of windshield wipers will help eliminate any excess moisture on your windshield.
  • Turn on fog lights – Many cars have fog lights and should be used to help with your driving vision. It will also help other motorist see you. If your car isn’t equipped with fog lamps, don’t turn on the high beams. High beam lights only cause more vision distortion because the light reflects off the fog.
